Could it be that we have reached a period of peak political correctness in America and that the left has badly miscalculated the impact of their efforts to censor anybody who they don’t agree with?
Democrats had best pay heed to the potential for blowback at the ballot box if they continue to appease the fanatical elements of their base that are fixated on identity politics, the tearing down of statues, social media purges and banning of songs that they find offensive like the holiday classic “Baby It’s Cold Outside” which many claim encourages date rape.
According to a new poll by the ultra-liberal National Public Radio that was just released, a majority of Americans believe that the reign of the thought police and the chilling form of forced diversity that has been imposed upon them has gone too far.
Via The Hill, “Poll: Majority of Americans oppose US becoming more politically correct”:
The majority of Americans oppose making the country more “politically correct” and are “upset” over things people can’t say anymore according to an NPR/PBS/Marist poll released Wednesday.
In the survey, 52 percent of respondents said they were opposed to the country becoming more politically correct and are upset “that there are too many things people cannot say anymore.” The poll did not give a specific definition for being politically correct.
The answers had a large split on party lines with 55 percent of those who identified as Democrats said they favored more political correctness, compared to only 13 percent of Republicans who said the same. Thirty-three percent of independents favored more political correctness.
“If the Democratic Party moves in a direction that is more to its base on this issue, it suggests independents are going to be tested to stay with the Democrats electorally,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
Additional details according to NPR, “Warning To Democrats: Most Americans Against U.S. Getting More Politically Correct”:
Fifty-two percent of Americans, including a majority of independents, said they are against the country becoming more politically correct and are upset that there are too many things people can’t say anymore. About a third said they are in favor of the country becoming more politically correct and like when people are being more sensitive in their comments about others.
That’s a big warning sign for Democrats heading into the 2020 primaries when cultural sensitivity has become such a defining issue with the progressive base.
