Rasmussen poll: One-third of GOP voters would contribute to private fund for Trump border wall

More than a third of Republicans surveyed in a new poll said they would contribute their own money to privately fund Trump’s proposed border wall.

Among likely voters, 21 percent said they would pay to fund the wall, according to a poll released Tuesday by conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports.

Additionally, while 34 percent of Republicans surveyed said they would privately contribute to pay for the wall if Congress would not fund it, 10 percent of Democrats surveyed said they would as well.

Among the survey respondents who said they want a border wall, 43 percent said they would put forward their own money to build it.

The same survey found that a majority of respondents would not pay more in taxes to fight illegal immigration, while 19 percent said they would pay an extra $100 a year. Another 19 percent said they are willing to pay $300 a year or more to fight illegal immigration.

Trump had been demanding $5 billion from Congress for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but Democrats have repeatedly rebuffed his request.

The two sides are quickly approaching a government shutdown if they cannot agree to year-end funding measures by the end of Friday night.

Trump said he would shut down the government if money for his border wall was not included in a spending bill, but the White House appeared to back down Tuesday, saying it wants to avoid a partial government shutdown.

The Rasmussen survey was conducted on Dec. 12 to 13 and interviewed 1,000 likely voters both over the phone and online. The margin of error for the survey is 3 percentage points.
